UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES OF ARTS AND DESIGN

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

RHYTHM- Indicates movements, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat. It helps to guide the viewer's eye to settle on a particular point.

BALANCE- A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art.

  • Symmetric Balance- both sides are equal on visual weight, of a complete mirror of the other

  • Asymmetric Balance- the two sides of the work of art is different and have dissimilar visual weight but can still provide a sense of balance.

A balanced work of art gives off a feeling of being comfortable and is pleasing to the eye.

EMPHASIS (CONTRAST)- Combines elements to identify the differences between those elements. It provides the focal point that direct the viewer's eye to a specific area, and the can attract the viewer's attention to that specific area or object.

GRADATION- Combination of elements using a series of gradual changes in those elements (e.g. large shapes to small shapes, rk hue to light hue, etc). It helps in creating a perspective, form, or visual movement.

PROPORTION- The relationship of certain elements to the whole to each other. It describes how the sizes of different parts of a piece of art or design is related to each other. It is used to create accurate images, mostly in realism style.

HARMONY- A combination of similar elements to stress their similarities, such as the use of repetitions and subtle gradual changes. It unifies all the elements and principles in art, and it gives the work of art a sense of cohesion.

VARIETY- The complexity or diversity of a work of art that adds interest to the work. It works through juxtaposition and contrast. It is done by placing visual elements to one another to create diversity among them, and contrast that drives the viewer's attention to the intended focal point (e.g. placing straight lines next to curvy lines).

MOVEMENT- A principle used by artists that guide the viewer's eye to move from one part of the artwork. It can also create illusions of movements.
