UNDERSTANDING THE ELEMENTS OF ART

Updated: Mar 26, 2022

The very first step on being an artist is understanding the fundaments of art like the elements and its principles. Elements of art is the foundation of graphic design, and without them, you wouldn't know how to create or analyze art. Understanding these elements means communicating with visuals that relays powerful messages in a beautiful and moving works in arts.

LINE- It is defined by a point moving in space. It can be two- or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied or abstract. Lines can help to change the viewer's perspective by manipulating its direction and distances.

SHAPE- A two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width. It can create complex drawings and paintings, affect composition, and contribute to the balance within a work.

FORM- A three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width and depth (e.g. cube, sphere, pyramid, cylinder). It can also be free flowing. This will help to produce an illusion of 3D and depth on a two-dimensional surface.

VALUE- The lightness and darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value and black is the darkest. The value between these extremes is called middle gray. Using this element, and artist can make the illusion of light.

SPACE- The positive and negative areas are defined, and a sense of depth is achieved in a work of art. With this, an artist is able to create effective imagery, convey messages and meanings, createLance, and draw the eye to their intended focal point.

COLOR- Composed of three properties, namely: hue, value and intensity.

  • HUE- name of color

  • VALUE- Hue's lightness or darkness

  • INTENSITY- Quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull)

It is used to depict and describe the subject, to portray mood, light, depth and point of view in a work of art.

TEXTURE- The way things feel or look as if they might feel if touched. It can affect mood, evoke psychological associations, bring to a medium, or divert our focus toward materials used in a work.

All of these elements of art are necessary for a person to call himself an artist. Without it, then arts won't be possible, because it enables us to describe what an artist had done, analyze the piece and communicate our thoughts and findings using common knowledge.
