CHOOSING Y0UR ART STYLE AND MEDIUM

Updated: Apr 8, 2022

ART STYLE   It is very important that beginning artists focus on developing their own style, and find their own unique way of expression. An artist's personal style usually progresses as the artist gains more confidence through experience, expands their database of knowledge, and acquires more skill with the materials. Choosing what suits best to your skills and interests makes art more interesting because it can be a way for you to express your inner thoughts and feelings. It is very important to note that your chosen art styles is not only limited to just one art style, it can two, or even more than that, as long as you are making progress and having fun along the way.    You may ask, "Can I develop my own unique art style?" The answer is a big YES! In fact, it is you. Just as you develop your Self and become more like “you” as you grow up, your artistic voice is doing the same thing. With every experience you have, your Self changes and grows, and with every piece of art you make, your style changes and grows. So, just keep discovering your talent, because there's no limit to it. ART MEDIUMS     The 'medium' is the material with which the artwork is made – the essential tool necessary for artistic creation. In the Visual Arts – paint, ink, crayons, charcoal, watercolours...In performance arts – the body of the performer; in Writing – the pen or writing software; in Internet art (Digital Art)– the programming tools... There are endless possibilities. Virtually anything can be used by artists in infinite combinations.    Artists like you choose a mode of expression (art style) to create their own artworks, and their original use of the medium is what allows them to express ideas or feelings though art. It is true that, in one medium the unique language, possible patterns and elements are put together to create new combinations and contrasts. “The ‘medium’ mediates”. It translates  and express artists’ ideas, messages or impulses thanks to their skill and sensibility. It is a vehicle for art. It is the very reason why art existed in the first place, almost everything can be used as a medium of art. There's endless possibilities to what an artist can use, so it shouldn't be an excuse that you can't do art because you don't have the right tools. Actually, there is no right tools for a right artwork, whatever you use to express your skills and emotions is regarded an art, it is always right. However, there are specific tools for specific art styles, like paints for painting...but whatever art style you do or whatever medium you use, it will always be art.     Furthermore, it is very important to know that choosing the right medium will greatly improve an artist's skills– YOUR skills! Contrary to what I said previously, there is right tools but not for right artworks (because art is always right). Choosing the right medium and learning how to use it to its fullest will help artist express themselves the best they can. We all express each other differently, we are all very sensations-prone creatures (so textures and colors matter) and we might feel more technically at home with one medium and less with another one. Choosing right might make the difference in between good and bad way to express ourselves. All this aside, you can express somethings better with some mediums than others, so that’s also an important part of the choice.
